Jamie Roxx is one of North America's premiere Pop Artists. Roxx started out in
Detroit Michigan, where the hard edge and grittiness seemed to seep into his paintings like gray water. He then studied and
obtained a masters degree in Fine Art Painting from the University Massachusettes' "Boston Fine Art Program". After a Jack
Kerouac-esque pursuit of painting subjects and life experience, Roxx found himself in many of America's famous cities,
and spent a brief stint in New Orleans. Roxx calls his style "Pop Noir" which he takes from his pop art, musical, artistic,
and cinematic influences which inspire his work. Roxx has become a moving force in the contemporary art world, almost
as if he has some preconceived notion or map of the trends, twists and turns. Roxx's images range from classic cinematic icons
to the commercial products of his world. Roxx also takes inspiration in the emotions, character traits, and stories of
those he surrounds himself with in the fast pace track which he not only works but plays in. His latest works display that
razor sharp edge for which he is known in private collections, commercial businesses and galleries throughout North America,
Europe and Asia. In 2001 The Rock Museum of Munich purchased his rendition of "The Beatles" . The painting is titled Fab Four and is one of the Museum's signature
pieces. In 2002 The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland acquired an original Beatles painting also. That same year The Centre de Pompidou, Paris acquired one of his signature Marilyn Monroe paintings, establishing the young
artist as a contemporary master of the Pop Art genre.
Roxx's artwork is all one of a kind, and are original paintings. At first glance
his work is often mistaken as screen prints, however, they are all painted by hand.
He has created multiple CD covers for various rock bands and DJs. He has also had
his work featured in a Target Stores' Christmas television commericial, and has had
a painting appear on the breakout hit television show Will and Grace.
Roxx emerged onto the contemporary art scene in the early 1990s in the hard-edged Detroit inner-city.
Roxx has always been a big fan of the film noir movies of the 1940s. He soon found
himself living, working and painting in an environment wrought with all the same plot lines, dramas and adventures of his
favorite cinematic genre.
"While having a drink in a cocktail bar with my fake ID at 17, a man walked into the bar, rested
his arm over my right shoulder from behind me and shot the bartender at point blank range in front of me. It was crazy, I
mean here was this guy dead like three feet in front of me. And the guy who killed him running out of the bar. What could
I do but paint the story which led up to that horrible scene?" recalls Roxx.
Roxx has evolved through four distinct phases in his artwork. He gained critical acclaim while
living in Southern California three years ago at his solo show "Color Images in a Black and White World" in San Diego,
California, USA.
The cult of celebrities, exclusive parties, notoriety and general craziness of the West Coast
scene became a major influence on his latest artistic growth. "Sure there's glamor, but what I want to do is sneak a peak
at what lurks just under the surface of it. There always seems to be a story."
After a self imposed sabbatical to write his upcoming book documenting the underbelly of the
Southern California club scene, he has reemerged to continue his domination and conquering rampages of the contemporary art
world.
